NATO counter-drone capabilities are set for a major investment cycle as Allies move to strengthen drone defence, operator training and rapid procurement across the Alliance.
At the NATO Summit Defence Industry Forum on 7 July 2026, Allies announced that more than USD 40 billion will be invested in counter-drone capabilities over the next five years. According to NATO, Allies also aim to train five times as many drone operators by the end of 2027.
The announcement is part of NATO’s wider “Drone Edge” agenda. It reflects how drones and counter-drone systems have become decisive battlefield capabilities, especially after the war in Ukraine demonstrated the operational impact of low-cost unmanned systems at scale.
NATO Counter-Drone Capabilities Move Into a New Investment Phase
The investment plan marks a shift from individual national counter-drone purchases toward a broader Alliance-wide capability push. NATO wants Allies to improve their ability to detect, identify and neutralise hostile drones quickly and at scale.
This is now a core air-defence challenge. Small drones, one-way attack UAVs and loitering munitions can pressure military bases, logistics hubs, command posts and forward units. They can also force defenders to use expensive interceptors against cheaper threats.
For NATO, the answer is a layered approach. Counter-drone capabilities must combine sensors, command-and-control, electronic warfare, kinetic interceptors, directed-energy systems and trained operators.
A NATO Counter-Drone Marketplace for Faster Procurement
NATO will establish a counter-drone marketplace to support rapid procurement. The marketplace is intended to give Allies access to systems that are NATO-tested, NATO-compatible and available for purchase.
This could reduce one of the biggest barriers in counter-drone adoption: speed. Drone threats evolve quickly, while traditional acquisition processes often move slowly. A shared marketplace can help Allies identify mature systems faster and avoid duplicating evaluation work.
The approach also supports interoperability. If Allies buy systems that have already been tested against NATO requirements, they are more likely to integrate into common air-defence and command networks.
Drone Training Expands Through NFTE
Training is the second major pillar of the initiative. NATO will use the multinational Flight Training Europe initiative, known as NFTE, to support drone-operator training.
NFTE already supports aircrew training across the Alliance. It will now be extended to cover drone operators, reflecting the growing need for specialised personnel who can operate, coordinate and defend against unmanned systems.
At the Forum, Finland, France and Sweden joined the seventeen other NFTE members. Participating Allies have access to sixteen flight centres across eight countries.
NSPA Contract Adds Surveillance Drone Procurement
NATO’s Support and Procurement Agency also awarded a contract worth hundreds of millions of dollars to procure surveillance drones for Allies.
This shows that the drone agenda is not only defensive. NATO also needs more unmanned systems for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and battlefield awareness.
Surveillance drones can help commanders detect threats earlier, monitor borders and support targeting. They also feed the data layer needed for effective counter-drone operations.
Ukraine Drives NATO’s Drone Lessons
Ukraine has become the clearest battlefield example of drone warfare at scale. Both reconnaissance drones and strike drones have changed how forces detect targets, direct fires and attack logistics.
NATO’s official “Drone Edge” text states that drones have fundamentally altered modern warfare and that drone incidents affecting Allies, especially on the Eastern Flank, have increased in recent months.
This makes counter-drone capability a readiness requirement. NATO forces must be able to operate under persistent drone surveillance and defend against massed UAV attacks.
Industry and SMEs Become Central to NATO’s Drone Edge
NATO highlighted the role of defence industry and innovation ecosystems, including small and medium-sized enterprises. This is significant because the drone market is evolving faster than many traditional defence sectors.
Smaller companies often develop sensors, software, electronic warfare tools and low-cost interceptors faster than large prime contractors. NATO’s marketplace model could therefore open more routes for innovative suppliers to reach Allied customers.
However, scaling remains the main challenge. Counter-drone systems must not only work in trials. They must be produced in sufficient numbers, supported by resilient supply chains and integrated into operational networks.
Counter-Drone Systems Become a Defence-Industrial Priority
The USD 40 billion commitment makes counter-drone systems one of NATO’s major near-term procurement priorities. It will likely accelerate demand for radars, RF sensors, optical systems, jammers, interceptors, command software and operator-training infrastructure.
The investment also fits a wider European and transatlantic rearmament trend. Allies are increasing spending, but they must turn that spending into scalable output. Counter-drone systems are a clear test of whether industry can respond quickly to changing battlefield requirements.
For suppliers, the opportunity is substantial. Companies that can deliver NATO-compatible, affordable and rapidly deployable counter-drone technologies will be well positioned in the next phase of Alliance procurement.
